JOHN HORNER – EXPRESSIVE  PAINTER

John Horner was born in England in 1944 and attended Takapuna Grammar school as a pupil of Owen R. Lee.  He graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1965 with honours in painting.  He taught secondary school art until the early 80’s and was a senior lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design until 2013. He has recently retired to concentrate on painting.

John Horner’s  painterly style is inspired by the rugged New Zealand landscape with a further interest in cityscapes inspired by New Zealand’s sharp light contrasts. In 2003 Horner completed a Master of Fine Art degree with honours.  The theme for these works is New Zealand railway history, rekindling a lifelong interest in trains and produced a series of mixed media abstractions on a railway theme.

2018 Artist in Eden Karekare residency at Karekare house. Combined exhibition of the Four residency artists at the Pah Homestead.

• 3 times finalist in the James Wallace Art Award and represented in the Wallace collection

• Included in many private art collections in New Zealand and overseas

  Participant in the Artists in Eden event in Auckland for twenty eight years.
